Reviving old classics seems to be the order of the day. And while some films like Naya Daur are being re-released in new coloured avtars, many others like Victoria No 203 are being remade.

However, one film that’s all set to take a leap into a different league altogether is veteran filmmaker Shakti Samanta’s hit black-and-white thriller Howrah Bridge starring the legendary actors Ashok Kumar and Madhubala.
The 1958 cult classic is all set to be made into a full length animation film, in what is touted to be a first of sorts.
The film that featured Helen’s most celebrated cabaret number Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo also starred legendary actors like K N Singh, Om Prakash, Madan Puri, Mehmood and Minoo Mumtaz. O P Nayyar’s blockbuster music and soundtrack was another high point of the film.
And, interestingly, all the hit songs of the film, including Aaiye Meherbaan — that had the nation swaying to their tunes as Madhubala seduced cine-goers with her eyes and the ever-famous smile — will be retained in the animated version as well.
Confirming this, producer Pritish Nandy — who’s acquired the rights of the film — says that it’s like a dream come true. “It has long been my desire to make Howrah Bridge in a modern animation format. It’s my personal tribute to Shakti Samanta,” says Nandy.

Incidentally, Samanta is also the consultant on the movie. Manny Bains, chairman of the company that will be taking care of the animation part, says, “It’s a rare opportunity that one gets to remake a cult classic like Howrah Bridge. Today’s generation will be able to see the film in a bigger, sexier, more exciting, modern format, in full colour.”
So, all the fans who rejoiced at Madhubala’s coming alive in the coloured version of Mughal-e-Azam, have another reason to celebrate as the screen goddess’ animated avtar is all set to wow audiences once again with a flash of that to-die-for smile.
